Energy Star Night 2025 – Lighting Design with Crowdglow Integration

For the 21st edition of Energy Star Night, the lighting design created in 2023 was developed further under particularly tight load-in and load-out conditions. I adapted the entire system for the use of pre-rig trusses and expanded it with twelve additional lighting pods in the audience area. This retained the spatial principle of the design while allowing the production to be installed and dismantled more efficiently.

The lighting pods extended the stage’s beam architecture deep into the Hallenstadion. Additional Robe MegaPointe fixtures brought the audience more strongly into the lighting compositions and expanded the spatial impact both inside the venue and for the livestream.

A second focus was the integration of the Crowdglow system into the Energy app. The lighting console could control the colours of the audience’s smartphone screens and incorporate their camera LEDs into the show. This turned the audience itself into a controllable layer of the lighting design. As DoP, I was also responsible for the camera lighting for the livestream, coordinating the appearance of the stage, artists and audience across the different camera perspectives.

The lighting system combined Robe MegaPointe, LED Beam 350, Ayrton MiniPanel FX, Robe Spiider, GLP JDC-1 and Cameo Zenit 600 fixtures to create defined beams, broad fields of colour and precise accents. Six Robe RoboSpot systems with Robe Forte FS fixtures provided front light, with two further systems used as backlight.

My team designed the show during preprogramming using one Depence and one Wysiwyg system and handled the Lighting Operating during the event. On 4 April 2025, 13,000 visitors experienced the approximately four-hour show at Zurich’s Hallenstadion, while the complete event was also streamed live on energy.ch.
