Lighting design for the first Energy Star Night in Basel
The first Energy Star Night in Basel required a new lighting design for an existing stage set. The St. Jakobshalle offered substantially less roof load capacity than Zurich’s Hallenstadion, while none of the venue’s in-house trusses could be used for the production. The weight of the lighting system therefore became the starting point for the entire design.
I redesigned the truss layout and fixture selection around these conditions. The aim was to preserve the spatial impact of the stage and its large video surfaces despite the reduced loads, while providing enough flexibility for the different performances and the livestream. Robe MegaPointe, CLF Poseidon Wash M, Ayrton MiniPanel FX, Robe Spiider and GLP JDC-1 fixtures formed the stage lighting system. Cameo Zenit 600 fixtures extended the lighting into the audience.
Six remote follow systems provided key light for the different performance positions. Two further systems added controlled backlight. All eight positions used Robe RoboSpot systems with Robe FORTE FS fixtures. This kept the artists clearly defined both inside the venue and in the livestream camera images.
My team designed the show during preprogramming using one Depence and one Wysiwyg system and handled the Lighting Operating during the event. This preparation allowed the new lighting system to be adapted precisely to the short and stylistically varied performances.
The 20th edition of the Energy Star Night was the first to take place in Basel. The sold-out Christmas edition brought 10,000 people to the St. Jakobshalle, while the show could also be followed via livestream.
