Lighting design for Energy Air 2024 at Bernexpo
Adapting the stage design developed in 2023 to the Bernexpo site defined the lighting design for Energy Air 2024. The new location required a revised spatial concept and an extension of the inflatable scenic elements into the audience area. At the same time, the tightly timed show had to work reliably for 35,000 people on site and for the livestream.
I adapted the lighting design to the new spatial conditions. The underlying structure and fixture types from the previous year were retained. Additional Cameo Zenit fixtures integrated the scenic elements in the audience area into the overall image. Robe iSpiider fixtures on the towers could be used flexibly as audience lighting or as additional keylights.
Six Robe RoboSpot systems with Robe iForte LTX FS fixtures provided controlled front light from towers positioned throughout the audience. Two further systems on the back truss supplied backlight. This kept the artists clearly defined across the considerable distances of the site.
A particular challenge was lighting the ten-metre inflatable astronaut on the B-stage. For the finale, it needed to remain legible as a central figure both on site and on camera, while forming a coherent final image with the stage, audience and fireworks.
My team preprogrammed the show in parallel on one Depence and one Wysiwyg system and handled the lighting operation during the event. This allowed the existing show concept to be adapted precisely to the new location and its additional spatial layers.
